Shin Lim Makes Pieces of a Card Disappear and Reappear for Jimmy and Questlove

-We are joined right now by
an incredible young magician. He is a two-time winner of
“America’s Got Talent.” And now he has
his own Las Vegas residency at the mirage
called “Limitless.” Give it up for Shin Lim! [ Cheers and applause ] -Thank you. Thank you. Alright, Quest, do you mind
helping me out? Alright. Go ahead.
Take a look at this deck. Run though the cards and take
one card out of the deck. Now, Jimmy, I’ve kind of
made my entire career out of 52 playing cards, which is kind of crazy
if you think about it. But I want to take it
to the next level. Instead of using 52 cards,
I’m just going to use one. You got it?
-I got it. -Any card. Okay. Give it to me, give it to me,
the card. -Yes.
-Alright. Watch, look. Alright, cool, cool.
We have the card. Now, instead of focusing on
the card, I want you to focus just on
the corner of the card. What is it? The Queen of spades.
Okay, watch. Focus on the corner.
I’m gonna — You can actually
hear the rip happening. Yeah? The top right.
I’ll take it completely off. Look, Jimmy. I want you
to just focus on this. Can you blow on the corner?
Go ahead. Look, just like that. It vanishes completely. Look, Quest, I didn’t go
anywhere near you, no? Turn around and show your back
to the camera. Go ahead, turn around,
turn around, turn around. Look at the screen up there.
Look at the screen up there. And, look. It’s —
-Yo! -Actually, Quest, I don’t want
to touch anything. Take the card, take it, take it.
Take the corner, yeah, yeah. Grab it.
Reach over and grab it, yeah. -This?
-Yeah, yeah. -Okay.
-No, grab the corner. Did you grab it? -I grabbed it, yeah.
-You grabbed it. You have it? -Yes.
-Grab the corner. There we go, okay. I thought you vanished
the corner for a second. Look, watch, Jimmy.
I’ll tell you what. Hand it like this.
-Yeah. -Okay, great. We’re gonna
place it into your hand. Close your hand up. I want you to
just focus on that piece. I want you to
focus as much as possible. You’re gonna start —
Look, nothing in my hands. Lower your hand.
Lower your hand. Watch, you’re gonna slowly start
to feel something interesting. The piece is going to start to
slowly somehow disintegrate. You’re gonna notice —
[ Audience ohs ] Watch. Open up your hand. -Oh, my gosh.
-Wait, no, no. Not only does the piece vanish,
Jimmy, look at the Queen. Watch the Queen.
One, two, three! And it reappears over here.
But they’re in different pieces. See, look. It’s in different —
four different pieces. So, Jimmy, tell you what.
[ Laughter ] No, Jimmy, you’re going to have
to help me out on this, okay? -No.
-No, no, no. [ Laughter ]
-I’m gonna run away. I’m gonna run away.
I’m gonna run away. -The trick’s not done yet.
The trick’s not done yet. On the count of 3, you’re going
to help me count to 3, okay? Ready? Watch. 1, 2 — 2, 1 — Alright, sorry,
I’ll start with 1. Ready?
-Okay, ready? -1, 2, 3. -And look, they reappear
right over here. But, Jimmy, look. It’s still missing a corner.
It’s still missing a corner. Right?
-Yes. -Tell you what. Your tie.
Can you take your tie? Flip out your tie.
Take out your tie. And flip it over. [ Audience ohs ] -How did you do that, man?
Oh, my gosh. This guy is unbelievable. Whoa!
[ Audience ohs ] -Nothing on the back,
nothing on the front? Jimmy, here you go.
[ Cheers and applause ] Merry Christmas, man.
Thank you for having me. -Shin Lim!

  1. This is all setup from before
And also if u look closely he didn't tore the corner apart but instead gave another similar looking corner which he had in his hands before

  2. It's impressive because if you assume he planted everything beforehand, how do you explain Quest giving him the exact card he needed?

  3. Easy. I saw how he did that first time looking. Why many of you can't see the thing at 1:57 amaze me. 4 pieces prepared at the table, just flips up quickly.

  4. I have been a fan of Shin Lim for awhile but haven't made it to Vegas yet to see his show. Need to change that, every single trick I see is ridiculously fast and ridiculously well performed. He even said this one was "risky" and he developed it in two days….what a master

  5. What in the demonic f*** was that?,oh wait I get it,he invokes the other being called the Demogorgon from the other side, no wonder it's called Stranger Things, there's no other simple explanation for this😂

  6. My initial theory about the "pieces" appearing was that the black velvet is actually a large ipad and the cards were digital. They almost look green screen. However, there is no screen reflection. If you repeat the appearance of the 4 pieces and the disappearance of the 4 pieces over and over and over, you can see slight motion that makes me think the pieces are actually real, and that they are sliding in/out of the velvet matte at an incredible rate.

These have nothing to do with the actual card that he's simply palming and unpalming (his forté). (e.g., when the Queen of Spades reappears on the table, it drops from his palm.)

The weak point of this trick is the shoulder piece, which I used photoshop to reconnect and it matches fairly well… but Shim uses this corner tear often and I think he has cards that are microperforated to tear nearly perfectly every time. The Queen of Spades is a force, it's the only way for the whole trick to work. How he forces Quest to pick that card is beyond me. That said, the shoulder piece is on his jacket the entire time. So a producer/someone put it on there when they told Quest to stand in that position and not move*. Which means the band was staring at the corner piece on his shoulder the entire time and they would have *known to keep mum about it. It would've been almost cooler if there had been an audible gasp from the band, as if the shoulder piece (unbeknownst to the audience/viewer) suddenly"appeared" to them.

  7. ive got a better trick SEE AT MY JOB 5 MINUTES AFTER THE TIME CLOCK RINGS I AM THERE, OH BUT WAIT IT GETS BETTER, AT THE END OF MY SHIFT 10 MINUTES PRIOR TO IT RINGING, I AM GONE!!! thank you ladies and gentlemen for coming, don't text and drive

  8. Crazy! Anyone know the name of the gimmick where the 4 pieces instantly appear on the mat then dissapear and form the full card?

  9. Shin isn't really doing magic. It's just that his bedhead is so distracting the audience doesn't have time to follow what he's doing with the cards.

  10. This is the real Jeff be happy that I have great roommates I love my strippers every night and that's a good thing

  11. I understand the need to perform with the show's celebrities, but I think Shin Lim is 100% better when performing solo, at his own pace, perfectly synched to his music and sound EFX

  12. pfft I can do that trick…
    ….

    with my pay check….
Piece of will disappear and appear in someone else's pocket….
It will split in to multiple pieces and disappear…

  13. Lol at the begining:
    "pick any card"
    — Starts riffeling the deck (and makes a mess) for a minute until it finds the card he was told to choose.
    Worst stooged act ever….

  14. All have to do with the magic black base he had on the table. U see a his tricks always do it in that black base…. i believe if one day he do a magic trick with out that!!

  15. Just watch 1:56 and 2:19 in 0.25x , you gonna know the reality known as after-editing skills . Comn jimmy we aren't fools. We don't expect such video tricks on one of the world's biggest talk show.

  16. I'm sorry, but at the 1:57 mark that's nothing but video masking. I know there's quite a few up and coming (mostly Asian) magicians that use video editing as part of their act in a new form of visual illusionism. The live reactions are usually staged. Like what Cris Angel started doing with the handy-cam "man on the street" style footage.
