Music Therapy Program at SickKids

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
How I wonder what you are. Everything with Lukas is music, that’s how
we get into the world of Lukas is music. I’m Carolyn I’m one of the full time Music
Therapists here at SickKids. Music is so accessible and it gives patients
and families an option, and I think that opportunity in a setting like this is golden, is golden. Good morning, it’s nice to see you today. Music therapy gives children and young people,
and even families an opportunity to express themselves in a way that is different from
using their words, especially for children who have non-traditional ways of communicating,
not being able to verbalize their choices can be a challenge. So sometimes its a matter of giving them the
opportunity to choose what they want to have happen, and communicate that effectively. This one is better, look at this one! Yeah there we go! Oh my goodness, we don’t want that one either. If you don’t want it, that’s ok! We don’t have to make music, Tegan can listen. When kids are in the hospital here, it can
be very stressful, it can be intervention after intervention, treatment after treatment,
actually having to face your stress or face your anxiety, face mortality, face sadness,
face grief, whatever that unlocks, music can help to process some of those emotions, those
thoughts, feelings physically even. I think the misnomer is that “Oh that must
be so much fun,” and it always isn’t. Sometimes it’s very evocative, very emotional,
very expressive. So what do you think, you want to start with
the bongos? And that can help patients and families work
through difficult emotions and express difficulties and challenges. And you let me know when you are done ok? Using music can be so life-giving, over time
you might see a shift in the emotion, a shift in the response from a patient and/or family. A level of engagement that they don’t have
with other team members, and it can really provide a very holistic opportunity of intervention
for a patient and family while they are here. It’s time to say, goodbye to you.
